Paul Nicholas, famed for his role in Just Good Friends, is heading to Albert Square for a role in BBC One soap, EastEnders.

The West End actor will play Gavin Sullivan, the estranged husband of Gillian Taylforth's character Kathy Beale.

Speaking about his new role, Nicholas, 69, said: "I am delighted to be joining the wonderful cast... for what is going to be an exciting time ahead.

"I can't wait to get started and seeing what's in store for my character."

News of the actor's casting comes just weeks after the soap's 30th anniversary saw the return of Kathy - who viewers thought had died in a car crash in South Africa.

Dominic Treadwell-Collins, the show's executive producer said: "We are all thrilled that Paul has agreed to join our cast to play Gavin.

"It's brilliant to have him back on our screens, playing a major part in Kathy's explosive return to the Square, while also holding the key to many more of the Square's secrets."

Nicholas' casting follows Denise Van Outen's appearance and the arrival of newcomer Paul Coker, played by Jonny Labey.
