Emma Stone has said that she was holding the Best Actress card ‘the entire time’ during the Best Picture gaffe at this year’s Oscars.

The actress said that she didn’t want to ‘start stuff’, but was confused as to how Warren Beatty was able to read from the Best Actress card instead of the Best Picture card during the epic blunder that saw La La Land mistakenly announced over Moonlight.

“I f****** loved Moonlight. God, I love Moonlight so much. I’m so excited for Moonlight,” she said backstage after the ceremony.

“And, of course, it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land. I think we all would have loved to win Best Picture.”

“But we are so excited for Moonlight. I think it is one of the best films of all time. So I was pretty beside myself.”

She added: “I was also holding my Best Actress in a leading role card that entire time.

“So whatever story - I don’t mean to start stuff - but whatever story that was, I had the card. So, I’m not sure what happened. And I really wanted to talk to you guys first.”

While there is still some confusion about how the wrong film got announced, it seems that presenters Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed a Best Actress envelope on stage.

Seeing the title ‘La La Land’, Beatty announced that as the winner of Best Picture rather than the real winner, Moonlight.

Halfway through their acceptance speech, La La Land producers opened the Best Picture envelope to discover the error.

“This is not a joke, Moonlight has won Best Picture,” Jordan Horowitz said on stage.
