US band One Republic led the celebrity tributes to the victims of the suspected terror attack on a Christmas market in Berlin.

The group told their followers that they were at Breitscheidplatz square the night before, where 12 people were killed and 48 more injured when a an articulated lorry ploughed into the market outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.

Paying their respects on Twitter they wrote: “Our thoughts go out to all the families of the victims at the Christmas Market in Berlin. We were at that market last night. So so sad.”

Fellow musician James Arthur also paid tribute and revealed he was at the square hours before the incident took place.

“So sad to hear what happened at the Christmas market in Berlin today, I left that spot just this morning. Thoughts are with the families,” he tweeted.

La Toya Jackson posted, “So sad be #safe guys!” while David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones lamented 2016, tweeting: “This year, man…”

Floral tributes and candles have also been laid at the site.

The crash took place at 7.15pm GMT on Monday night.

The driver of the lorry is said to have arrived in Germany in February as a refugee.

The DPA news agency reported that he was an Afghan or Pakistani asylum seeker.

He is being held by police after being arrested near the scene.
