Nicki Minaj has announced her retirement from music in order to have a family.

The Grammy-nominated pop star declared her intention to quit the music industry in a post on Twitter.

She wrote: “I’ve decided to retire & have my family. I know you guys are happy now.

“To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, [x] in the box- cuz ain’t nobody checkin me," she added in reference to her remix of Alicia Keys's hit 'Girl on Fire'.

She ended the post: "Love you for LIFE.”

Last month, Minaj, 36, told listeners of her 'Queen Radio' Apple Music show that she and boyfriend Kenneth Perry, 41, had applied for a marriage license and would be wed in "about 80 days."

“We did get our marriage licence,” Minaj told Queen Radio in June, before opening up on how her relationship has put her in a “happy place.”

“I think I have what I was striving for, just happiness,” she said. “It was so hard to get to a happy place. Now that I’m there I don’t want to compromise that for anyone or anything."

Fans have responded with disbelief to the shocking announcement.

'SAY IT ISN'T TRUE!" tweeted one social media user, alongside a weeping meme.

Others have posted photos of themselves in tears, with one writing: "About to look up the word 'retire' hopefully it means dropping an album tomorrow, wish me luck."

"Love and support you Nicki, just know you've STARTED A FAMILY already It's us :')" commented another fan.

While others have willed the post to be a joke.

"Please say sike," a number of Twitter users have pleaded.

Minaj first landed on the music scene in 2010 with her album Pink Friday.

She's become known for her outspoken comments, colourful wigs.feuds with other singers, including Cardi B.

She has won six American Music Awards, has been a judge on American Idol, and was named in Time's 100 most influential people in 2016.

Her representatives have been contacted for comment.
