The MTV Movie & TV Awards have scrapped the Best Actor and Best Actress categories to go gender neutral for the first time.

Giving their biggest awards ceremony a major overhaul, the music broadcaster has announced that female and male actors will compete against each other in the same acting category.

This means that Emma Watson and Taraji P. Henson will go head-to-head with Hugh Jackman and Daniel Kaluuya for Best Actor in a movie.

Other nominations in the big screen acting category includes James McAvoy for Split and Hailee Steinfeld for her role in The Edge of Seventeen.

The Best Actor in a TV Show is also mixed, with nominations going to Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Mande Moore and Millie Bobby Brown.

Jordan Peele’s psychological horror Get Out leads the way with six nominations, including Movie of the Year, Best Fight Against the System and Best Actor.

British star Kaluuya will go up against Riz Ahmed, Yara Shahidi, Issa Rae and Chrissy Metz in the Next Generation category.

The National Television Awards were one of the first ceremonies to scrap best actor and actress categories back in 2008.

They now celebrate Best Drama Performance and Best Serial Drama Performance, regardless of gender.

“It felt right for the National Television Awards to make the change," said organiser Kim Turberville.

“A great performance is great regardless of gender and we think that dropping the male/female.”
