Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga were among the big winners at this year’s MTV EMAs, taking home two gongs each.

The pop superstars were honoured at the ceremony in Rotterdam while fellow singers Beyonce and Adele were snubbed.

Bieber won the Best Fans award for his legion of loyal Beliebers along with Best Song for his hit Sorry, but was unable to attend the bash due to his Purpose World Tour.

Gaga was also absent and thanked fans for her Best Female Act and Best Look gongs via a pre-recorded video message from Tokyo.

Beyonce was nominated for Best Female, Best Video for Formation, Best Live and Biggest Fans but failed to pick up any.

Adele was also up for four gongs but went home empty handed after losing out on Best Song, Best Female, Best Live and Best UK and Ireland act – which went to Little Mix.

The four-piece girl group were shocked to discover they had fought off tough competition from Adele, Coldplay, Years and Years and Zayn Malik.

Sharing the news on Twitter they posted: “WHAAAAT! We won?!' the band tweeted. 'We won an #MTVEMA on #GetWeird's anniversary! ALL because of you... Love you guys to the MOON & Back the girls x.”

Other winners included Coldplay who took home Best Rock Act, The Weeknd and Daft Punk who won Best Video for Star Boy and Shawn Mendes who was crowned Best Male.

US rock band Green Day were hailed as ‘Global Icons’ and said they were happy to be in Europe and away from the “horrendous” US presidential election.

“I’ve got to say one thing, it's really nice to be in Europe right now,” said lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong.

“Most of all it's nice to be out of America, just for a second because of this horrendous election that’s going on right now.”

The musical event was hosted by Bebe Rexha who told the VIP audience that the gongs had been turned purple in memory of Prince who died in April.

Laura Whitmore hosted the red carpet - which saw a performance from Anne-Marie - and left fans confused as to why she wasn't on Strictly Come Dancing.

Sunday night's show, which is pre-recorded, marked the end of Whitmore's BBC ballroom journey.
