Mollie King has said she felt a real “pressure to grow up” when she turned 30 last weekend, although it’s given her a renewed confidence in the recording studio.

The Saturdays star is “embracing” the age milestone as she gears up to release a brand new single this summer, after her debut solo track Back to You failed to make much of a chart impact last year.

“To be honest I did feel like ‘Oh my goodness 30, there’s the real pressure to grow up’. I thought that it was scary,” she told the Standard at the Patrón bar at the Glamour Awards.

“But now I’m actually feeling okay, now that my birthday has come and gone I’m kind of embracing it.”

King was thrown a glitzy surprise birthday party at Mews of Mayfair last week where she was reunited with band mates Frankie Bridge, Vanessa White, Rochelle Humes and Una Foden.

“There’s something powerful and you’re more confident and experienced in your 30s so we may not be as young as we were but we’ve got so much to add to it,” said King.

The pop star said she develops “thicker skin” the older she gets: “I definitely know who I am, but we all do have things that we are insecure about.”

King has been splitting her time between recording her debut solo album, which draws on her relationship with ex-boyfriend David Gandy, and working on her fashion and beauty blog.

While last summer’s single received positive reviews, it limped into the UK charts at number 90, faring better on the iTunes chart with a peak position of number 18.

“I’ve got a new single coming out later this summer and I’ve got a fashion blog as well that I’m really throwing everything into, so that’s taking up all of my time,” she said.
