She started her career as a squeaky clean Disney star, but Miley Cyrus has come a long way since the Hannah Montana days.

Refusing to be given any kind of label or put into a box, the 23-year-old has become a spokesperson for LGBT rights, gender, pansexualty and doing what you want to do.

In a brand new interview with Variety, Cyrus says she now ‘understands’ her sexuality more, and that she doesn’t feel straight or gay.

Here are the most awesome things the pop star has said about sexuality and gender:

1. On not wanting to be defined by one label

“My whole life, I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality,” she told Variety.

“I always hated the word ‘bisexual’, because that’s even putting me in a box. I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl.”

“Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more.

"I was like 'Oh — that's why I don't feel straight and I don't feel gay.' It's because I'm not.”

2. On being a feminist

“I am a feminist – there’s still inequality to fight – but I don’t relate to what people have made men and women into," she said in an interview with Elle last year.

“Like, men play sport, and they eat meat, and women sit in a dress painting their nails.

“I’m more extreme and badass than most guys, but that doesn’t make me a boy. And the other night I wore a pink dress because I felt cute. I can bake a cupcake and then go play hockey.”

3. On getting her t*** out

“You get your t*** out, and they are all looking, then you can use that space to say something and get them to listen."

4. On coming out

“I grew up in a very religious Southern family,” she told Variety. “The universe has always given me the power to know I'll be okay.

“Even at that time, when my parents didn't understand, I just felt that one day they are going to understand."

5. On same sex marriage

When the the Supreme Court passed a law allowing same-sex couples to marry anywhere in the US, Miley tweeted:

"What a great f****** day!!!!! #gayok #loveisthelaw thank you America for not cutting my chances of finding true love forever and ever by 50%."

6. On being open to (pretty much) anything

Speaking to Paper Magazine last year, Miley said: “I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn't involve an animal and everyone is of age.

"Everything that's legal, I'm down with. Yo, I'm down with any adult - anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me. I don't relate to being boy or girl, and I don't have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”

6. On her legacy

“My empowerment comes from feeling like I have a purpose now. On my tombstone, I didn't want the Wrecking Ball lyrics.

"I wanted it to be something greater. I'm the only f****** Disney star who would say I'm pro lesbian and gay, before it was okay to say that.”
