Meryl Streep branded Mariah Carey a “b****” and accused her of trying to “suck up” to Steven Spielberg after the pop diva stole her seat at the Golden Globes.

Carey, 47, begged for Streep’s forgiveness online after she explained how she accidentally ended up in the actress’ chair during a break in Sunday night’s ceremony.

But Streep’s comments were all in jest, as she joked about how she decided to sit on Carey’s lap after finding her at her table.

Recalling the singer’s faux pas on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Streep joked: “B**** stole my seat.

“I came over and you know, there she was, next to Spielberg sucking up.”

Streep, 68, explained how Carey apologised for grabbing the seat after being told by event organisers to sit down as the ceremony went back on air.

The Devil Wears Prada star said: “I said 'no, no, no, stay there and I’ll sit on your lap'. She’s comfy.”

Carey apologised to Streep for the incident on Twitter, writing: “Got caught mingling on the way to the loo during a commercial break.. took the first seat available, happens to be right next to Steven Spielberg. Cut to next commercial break, guess who comes back to her seat...

“(me) Dear Meryl, please forgive me!!! (MERYL STREEP) You can take my seat any time!”

Carey’s fans couldn’t cope with “two legends” being in such close proximity, with one tweeting: “2 legendary iconic queens of their profession, 2 of the most successful females in showbiz and I’m here for it!”

The Grammy award-winning singer was left open mouthed in shock as she came face-to-face with the Mamma Mia! star during a chat with Ryan Seacrest.

“Oh my god, that’s Meryl,” she said.“Can I meet you? I am such a fan! I’ve adored you since I was like eight.”

Clarkson pulled Streep in for a hug as the pair posed for a picture alongside Ai-jen Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, who Streep invited as her plus one to the 75th annual awards bash.
