Mavrick Sabre has revealed he had to disappear from the spotlight and “live life” to write the follow-up to his hugely successful debut album.

The 24-year-old Hackney-born singer has been away from the music scene for two years, travelling to Brooklyn, Jamaica, India and South Africa for inspiration.

The artist, who was raised in rural Ireland, believes his time away has helped get rid of the anger issues that plagued him when he became the breakthrough star of 2012.

But he also said he was prepared to “fight to the death” to get his new album heard.

He told the Standard: “There was a lot of different things going on that forced me to question myself, grow up, be happier and more positive in life. I needed to get back to love — a lot of anger had taken over. I took two years out to experience life. I learned a lot, grew from it. Musically I was inspired with travelling and meeting new people.

“I felt like I needed to live life a bit. I came back and started writing again — the second record just flew out.”

He performed tracks from the untitled follow-up to debut album Lonely Are The Brave at The Edition hotel in Marylebone last night.

He said he hoped the album, out in October, would reach a wider audience, adding: “The first record did really well in England and Ireland, and we never really got it pushed anywhere else.

“For this record, I can’t do that any more.

“I’ll fight to the death to get this record heard in as many countries as possible as I want to get my music heard.”
