One of the true icons of pop history, Mariah Carey, is celebrating her 48th - or possibly 49th - birthday.

The hitmaker most recently hit headlines as she rocked up to the Kids’ Choice Awards with ex Nick Cannon and their twins Moroccan and Monroe, six, wearing identical outfits.

Carey and daughter Monroe were decked out in black leather jackets, white tops and black jeans while Cannon and Moroccan wore white and orange tracksuits.

But sometimes the Touch My Body singer makes the front pages for slightly more outlandish reasons.

As the star celebrates her special day, here are five of her top diva moments.

Good Morning America – 2008

During a live performance on the show, the combination of a backing track going rogue and a backing singer belting it out a bit too loudly, led Carey to turn around mid-performance and, in tune, call the offender out with a rousing lyric of “stop singing my part now baby”.

President Obama’s inauguration – 2009

The Hero singer was apparently unhappy with Barack Obama after finding out where she was sat at his inauguration, according to the New York Post.

A source told the publication: “Mariah was in the VIP area, where every celebrity, like Jon Bon Jovi, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Bruce Springsteen, was seated.

“But somehow she thought she'd be up with the Obama family. When she realised she wasn't, she bailed.”

Nicki Minaj feud

The American Idol judge locked horns with her co-star Minaj and even went to the lengths of hiring “extra security” after a “threat”, it was reported.

Carey later took aim at Minaj’s songs, telling Barbara Walters that she “didn’t know she sang”.

New Year’s Eve 2016

Carey was lined up as the big act at the New Year’s Rockin’ Evening in Time Square back in 2016.

But as they tried to sing in 2017, a multitude of errors led to a disastrous performance and resulted in Carey storming off stage at around quarter to midnight.

Shading Jennifer Lopez

During an interview sometime in the early 2000s, Carey was asked about fellow artist Beyoncé and Carey gushed over the Halo singer.

But then attention turned to Lopez and Carey rather curtly responded ‘I don’t know her’ – a sentence that spawned its own meme, much to the delight of the internet.
