Made in Chelsea’s Binky Felstead and Josh ‘JP’ Patterson put on a united front as they made their first TV appearance together since announcing they are to become parents.

The reality TV stars said they are “excited” to start a family together and insisted they have rekindled their relationship for love – not because Felstead is pregnant.

Speaking to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on This Morning, about their tumultuous union, Felstead said: “It’s no secret we’ve had our ups and downs. We just happen to live ours out on camera.

“I found out I was pregnant when we weren’t actually together. [My mother] messaged Josh. I was pretty shaken up. She said: ‘Binky’s just taken a pregnancy text I think you should come over’.”

Paterson said they are taking the relationship slowly and trying not to be influenced by critics.

“When we found out about the news the most important thing was that we didn’t get back together for the child,” he said. “That’s the worst possible thing you could do.

“If you were going to get back together it’s because the love is there and the relationship is right. We had our up and downs in the past so it was a case of taking things slow.”

Patterson – who hadn’t been in a relationship before dating Felstead – said he believes their problems were ‘normal’, but got blown up as they play out their lives on TV.

He said: “When you’re young adults on a TV show I think what we were going through was very normal but when you’re on a show like we are everything is heightened.

“You have a lot of opinions from multiple different directions – from media, from fans, from friends and family – so situations that aren’t necessarily that big a deal can become ten times worse and it got to the point unfortunately where that got too much.”

Felstead added “Everyone has an opinion and this is what we signed up for. We’ve just got to stick on a united front and do the best we can do.

“We want this child to have the best life possible and I feel like we can do that 100 per cent. I feel like we’ve been given a real gift.”

Made in Chelsea is on E4 tonight at 9pm.
