The Love Island finalists were left glaring at their phones in an airport departure lounge when they were caught up in severe delays along with thousands of other Ryanair passengers today.

Winning couple Danni Dyer and Jack Fincham, and runners-up Laura Anderson and Paul Knops flew home today on the budget carrier from Palma de Mallorca airport, but were caught as the airline was affected by serious delays of up to three hours.

The couples eventually touched down safely in the UK after last night’s record-breaking finale saw 4.1 million viewers tune in.

The four couples from the final were spotted scrolling on their phones while waiting for their delayed Ryanair flight. They posed for selfies with fans to kill time. Meanwhile, back in the UK, thousands of air travellers were left queueing for hours at Stansted airport.

He posted a clip online showing him queueing with fellow contestants and other passengers on the steps of the plane when he eventually managed to board

He said: “A few Brit abroads going home, look at them. A couple of Brit abroads.”

Meanwhile Danni Dyer shared a string of clips of herself cosying up to Fincham.

One video showed the barmaid playfully leaning on the pen salesman with the caption: “Forever.”

Following the couple’s win Dyer posted a snap with her other half in the villa, writing: “Thank you Thank you so so so much!!!!!! Can’t believe we are the winners. Means the world to us and more.

“Love you for all the support words can’t describe how we are feeling. @jack_charlesf love you so much time to party!!! #loveisland2018.”

The group appeared to be in good spirits when they eventually made it to Stansted airport, where they were met by a huge crowd of fans.

They were mobbed by admirers, including friends, family and photographers, holding up banners and cheering for them in arrivals at Stansted.

The two winners were met with balloons with the words "Welcome home Dani and Jack" and "Jani" emblazoned on them, while Kazimir was greeted with a banner reading: "Welcome back to da ends Kaz."

Laura was welcomed by friends with flowers and balloons in the shape of unicorns, stars and hearts and a poster that said "Welcome back Bestie. £TeamLaura", while Wes's friends gathered round him and chanted "DBS", a reference to the "Do Bits Society".

Bearing huge smiles, the Love Island stars spent a few moments taking pictures with fans before being rushed out of the terminal by members of the ITV production team.

After touching down at Stansted, Dani shared a picture of herself cuddled up with Jack on Instagram to her 2.2 million followers.

She wrote: "Back in the UK with my favourite @jack-charlesf love you so much what a beautiful summer we have had."

Jack shared a similar photo on his page to his 1.8 million followers, writing: "Landed! First trip on a plane with my beautiful girlfriend. This doesn't feel real yet I'm so grateful!! Love you @danidyerxx."

Dani, the daughter of EastEnders actor Danny Dyer, and stationery salesman Jack were announced the winners of the series on Monday in the live finale, taking the £50,000 prize.
