Lord Alan Sugar was mocked on Twitter after he failed to identify roadside rubbish as laughing gas canisters.

The bemused businessman turned to his followers for help in solving the mystery of a small spattering of the silver cylinders.

In order to help fans identify the objects, he tweeted a picture alongside the caption: “Can anyone tell me what this cylinders are laying in the street. I have seen clusters of these before.”

Some users took the opportunity to mock the Apprentice star with some telling him they are “lucky charms” while others joked that they were “stink bombs” and “silver bullet casings from shooting werewolves”.

Others were more sympathetic to his lack of knowledge and sought to put him out of his misery by informing him that they are gas canisters used to hold nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas or ‘hippy crack’.

Sugar is known for being vocal on Twitter, and it's not the first time one of his posts has made him the butt of a joke.

Last year he was mocked for posting an image of himself next to his brand new "giant 90 inch TV". Followers proceeded to photoshop comical objects into the picture.

Sugar - who will be welcoming a host of entrepreneurs into his boardroom for a new series of The Apprentice later this year - is also famous for Twitter spats with Piers Morgan, but was most recently embroiled in a bizarre feud with EastEnders star Adam Woodyatt.

Sugar hit out at Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale, and accused him of putting on weight.

He tweeted: "I have been watching you. Regret to say you need to go on a better diet. You look like heart attack material. SORT IT!"

Woodyatt got his own back by commenting on a picture of Sugar wearing his new Piaget watch: "Strap looks a bit tight @Lord_Sugar have you put some weight on?"
