Lindsay Lohan has offered to switch on Kettering’s Christmas lights after sending an ‘offensive’ tweet about the town during the EU Referendum.

The Hollywood star, who is currently residing in the UK, has replied to the invitation made by Kettering MP Philip Hollobone after she questioned where the Northamptonshire town was.

On Friday she wrote on Twitter: “@MPChrisGrayling and #philiphollobone Direct message me about your offer. Would be happy to light the Christmas tree in #Kettering.”

The quick response comes just one day after Conservative MP Hollobone extended the strange invitation at the House of Commons.

He said: “Everyone knows where Kettering is - it's famous as the home of Weetabix breakfast cereal, Cheaney and Loakes shoes.

“And Kettering Town Football club has scored more goals in the history of the FA cup than any other football team in the country."

He went on to describe Lohan’s original tweet as ‘fierce and offensive’, asking her to ‘redeem her political reputation’ by attending the festive event.

The tweet in question, posted last Thursday, read: “#REMAIN Sorry, but #KETTERING where are you & why is this woman @BBCNews speaking on people rather than TELLING us what happens if the UK LEAVES?"

The post came after Kettering's EU referendum result was announced early on Friday morning, revealing that 61 per cent (32,877) had voted to leave.

Hollobone has since responded on his own account following Lohan’s acceptance of his invitation, writing:

“Let's hope she means it. If she wants to come to Kettering and turn the lights on she would be made very welcome.”
