Lewis Capaldi has shared his delight after having lunch with Sir Elton John.

The Scottish singer, 22, recently dined with the pop legend, 72, describing it as the “best afternoon of his life.”

Posting an image of the duo on Instagram, Capaldi said: “My life is f****** mental. Thank you for the free food @eltonjohn.”

John showed his support for Capaldi, writing: “Spending the day with the next British superstar.”

Celebrities flocked to show their appreciation for the duo’s lunch date, including Love Island host Caroline Flack, 39, who posted several heart and clapping emojis in response.

Busted member James Bourne, 35, found Capaldi’s caption amusing, and wrote: “The free food, I can’t breathe” with several laughing emojis.

The popstar responded, adding: “It was delicious and he was lovely best afternoon of ma life.”

Several people suggested there were similarities between the two singers, with Love Island voiceover star Iain Stirling, 31, writing: “That Faceapp is f***ing mental eh!”

Capaldi has had a monumental seven months following the success of his single, Someone You Loved.

The song, which features his distant relative and actor Peter Capaldi, 61, in its music video, jumped to number one in March.

His debut album, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, then shot to the top of the albums chart where he held the top position for six weeks.

The singer has also found himself at the centre of a spat with Noel Gallagher, 52, after the former Oasis star branded him an "idiot".

Capaldi took delight in the jibe and has since performed wearing a t-shirt with Gallagher's face in a love heart and sung "Don't Look Back in Anger".

He subsequently changed his profile on Twitter to "Chewis Capaldi" after Gallagher dubbed him "Chewbacca" adding he should "enjoy his 15 minutes of fame."
