Stars including Katy Perry, Amy Schumer and Miley Cyrus have paid tribute to Barack Obama following his emotional farewell address.

A host of famous fans praised the President as he delivered his final speech in Chicago on Tuesday night, with many thanking him for ‘setting an example’ during his eight years in office.

“Thank you for your incredible grace in leadership and for being an exceptional example for us all. You've made many who were sleeping, conscious - including myself,” Perry wrote on Instagram.

“I agree with you; we need to burst our bubbles and build real community again, face to face.

“I am excited to see the generation coming up who as you said, are "Unselfish, altruistic, creative, patriotic and believe in a fair, just, inclusive America. I cannot wait to see good triumph.”

Cyrus shared a post reading: “President Obama, I want to say thank you for everything you’ve done.”

Comedian Schumer shared a snap of the President, under the caption: "No one gets what I’m going through.”

“This is what a REAL victory lap looks like and that only works if you have actually done something to take a lap for,” Whoopi Goldberg wrote on Twitter.

Ellen DeGeneres commented: “@POTUS @BarackObama I love you more than I have space on Twitter to describe. #ObamaFarewell.”

A week before Donald Trump’s inauguration, Obama addressed the nation to thank them for their support.

“Every day I learned from you,” he said. “You made me a better president and you made me a better man.”

Thanking his wife, Michelle, he added: “You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody. And a new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model. You've made me proud. You've made the country proud.”
