Kate Winslet has said that her recent comments about the gender pay debate were ‘misinterpreted’.

The Oscar-winning actress, 40, has clarified that she does support equal pay in Hollywood after previously calling the conversation ‘vulgar’.

Speaking to E! News, she said: “When you're talking about specifics of pay that is a line of questioning I really had a hard time with.

“So my remarks were in response to that but only that. Of course we should be paid the same as the boys. We want to stand alongside them."

The Steve Jobs star went on to praise Jennifer Lawrence for sparking the debate with a candid open letter about the pay gap.

“It was a very difficult situation for her,” she said.

“Hopefully these discussions will continue to support the efforts that are being made all over the world for the right to equal pay in this field and all other industries.”

Winslet added: “For my entire career, I've really stood for women's rights and I will always remain entirely committed to empowering women and the right to equal pay is a fundamental part of that.”

The actress was quoted as saying that she found the whole debate ‘vulgar’ when interviewed by BBC’s Newsbeat last year.

She reportedly said: “I'm having such a problem with these conversations.

"I understand why they are coming up but maybe it's a British thing. I don't like talking about money; it's a bit vulgar isn't it?”
