Kanye West today apologised for his “lack of etiquette” after being criticised for using his phone during the opening night of a Broadway show about Cher’s life.

The rapper, who was in the audience for The Cher Show with wife Kim Kardashian was spotted on his mobile by one of the performers on stage.

Jarrod Spector, who plays Sonny Bono, tweeted from backstage: “Hey @kanyewest so cool that you’re here at @TheCherShow!

“If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here. It’s opening night. Kind of a big deal for us. Thanks so much.”

West then made a rare admission of guilt, tweeting: “Please pardon my lack of etiquette. We have so much appreciation for the energy you guys put into making this masterpiece.”

A spokesman for the rapper claimed he was not texting, but was instead using his phone to take notes on the performance after being so impressed.

Cher attended the performance at the Neil Simon Theater and sang If I Could Turn Back Time on stage during the curtain call.
