Justin Bieber has paid an emotional tribute to the late singer Christina Grimmie.

Bieber, 22, appeared to wipe tears from his eyes as he performed on stage in Winnipeg, Canada, as part of his Purpose world tour.

The Canadian artist asked "Grimmie, can you hear me?" as he sang his ballad, Purpose, while lying on his back.

Fans captured the moment and shared it on Twitter.

Grimmie, 22, was shot and killed by 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl during an autograph signing after performing at Before You Exit’s concert in Orlando on Friday.

Loibl was tackled to the ground by Grimmie’s brother before he turned the gun on himself.

Bieber reportedly met Grimmie through his ex Selena Gomez, whose stepfather was Grimmie's manager.

Gomez was among those who paid tribute to the late singer who found fame after starring on The Voice.

Adam Levine – who signed Grimmie to his label 222 Records – has offered to pay for her funeral.

Grimmie’s brother Marcus said he was “blown away” by the generous offer.

In a Facebook post, he wrote: “I found out this morning, that Adam Levine personally called my mother and said he will pay for the funeral and her plane flight, and I was blown away.

“I’m so blown away by everything right now. But all I can say is thank you.”

Demi Lovato, Cher Lloyd and Fifth Harmony have also paid tribute.
