Justin Bieber admitted that he started crying at the MTV VMAs because he was so ‘overwhelmed’ by the support he had received.

The pop superstar, 22, who made his comeback with a performance of new single What Do You Mean? at the ceremony last weekend, explained his outpouring of emotion to Jimmy Fallon.

Speaking to the chat show host on Wednesday night, he said: “It was just so overwhelming for me - everything, just the performance.

“I just wasn't expecting them to support me in the way they did. The last time I was at an awards show, I was booed."

Bieber added: “I think it's just like I’ve worked so hard at this album and at becoming the man I want to become, and then stepping into situations, you just can't help but feel judged.”

The star went on to insist that the moment he broke down in tears on stage was ‘authentic’ as he was feeling accepted.

He told Fallon: “So I was just feeling judged and wanting to win so badly, and wanting to do what I love so badly that I just put everything on the line.

“And I think that that was what was so special about the emotional moment at the end, that it was authentic. It was real. I was really just wanting it so bad.”

Despite being pleased with his performance, Bieber admitted that it wasn’t perfect, saying that he “missed some cues, so I was a little disappointed at that.”

The pop star was pictured arriving for the interview on a skateboard earlier in the day, showing off some tricks outside Radio City Music Hall.
