Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t resist poking fun at the Academy Awards as he confirmed his return as host for the 2018 ceremony.

The 49-year-old comedian and chat show host made his debut at this year’s ceremony, which became one of the most talked about in Oscars history.

Kimmel mocked the fiasco, which saw La La Land wrongly announced as the winner of Best Film over Moonlight, as he announced his return.

He tweeted: “Thanks to @TheAcademy for asking me to host The #Oscars again (assuming I opened the right envelope).”

Academy President, Cheryl Boone Isaacs said Kimmel was one of the “finest” hosts the ceremony had ever had.

Kimmel said he was “grateful” to Boone Isaacs for inviting him back for the 90th Academy Awards next year.

Speaking to E! News, he said: “Hosting the Oscars was a highlight of my career and I am grateful to Cheryl, Dawn and the Academy for asking me to return to work with two of my favorite people, Mike De Luca and Jennifer Todd.

“If you think we screwed up the ending this year, wait until you see what we have planned for the 90th anniversary show!”

This year's bash was plunged into chaos when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed the wrong envelope ahead of the Best Film announcement.

The gaffe - described as the worst in Oscars history - resulted in the Best Picture Oscar being wrongly awarded to La La Land rather than Moonlight.

Accountancy firm PwC, which counts the votes and organises the envelopes, took responsibility for the “unacceptable” mistake.

PwC partner Brian Cullinan was said to be distracted by tweeting pictures of actress Emma Stone moments before the mix-up.
