James McAvoy appears to have hinted at marital problems in an interview he had prior to announcing his split from his wife, Anne-Marie Duff.

The actors released a statement at the weekend to announce that they were parting after nearly 10 years of marriage – but McAvoy previously hinted that all was not well.

“You never know who’s the right one,” he told Woman. “I don’t think there is a ‘right’ one.

"There are many people you could fall in love with forever. It is an ongoing thing you work at.

"I don’t care if people are living without a marriage certificate. It is just about people saying, ‘I commit to you’.”

McAvoy and Duff – who have son Brendan, 10, together – announced their split in a joint statement in which they asked for privacy.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision to divorce,” the statement read.

“We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son.

“We ask that you respect our and, most importantly, our child’s privacy during this time.”

The stars first met on the set of Shameless where they played on-screen lovers Steve McBride and Fiona Gallagher.

They married in a low-key ceremony on October 18, 2006.
