Maya Jama has hinted that she is ready to marry, saying she no longer feels she has to choose between having a career or a family.

The BBC Radio 1 presenter, 23, has been dating grime artist Stormzy for three years, after they first met at a Red Bull Culture Clash event in October 2014.

Jama said she never thought marriage was an option for her as she had set her sights on being a career woman.

She told Standard Online: “I don’t think women should be limited to feeling like ‘oh I’ve only got one option – either a career or a family’. So many have both now and they’re living proof that you can. We shouldn’t have to choose.

“When I was younger I used to think ‘no, I’m not going to get married or have kids I’m just going to be a career woman and a rich aunty and be really fun’ and that was probably because subconsciously I thought that was the option – you have a big career or a family – and I wanted to be the career girl. As I’ve got older I’ve realised you can have both and live a happy life.”

Jama has seen her career springboard in the last year, fronting Radio One’s Greatest Hits show and securing co-presenting gigs on ITV gameshow Cannonball and Sky One’s Revolution. She also became the youngest person to host the MOBO Awards.

She said she hopes the series will help women address issues they may be too embarrassed to speak openly about.

“[The podcast] makes me feel like I’m not the only one who thinks that, which I hope so many people feel when they listen,” she said.

“I think if people can see that I’m super honest about my experiences it will help people to realise that ‘she goes through that too’ and it’s not all beautiful and glittery all the time – there are periods and poos and all that.

“Even before anybody cared what I was doing I’ve always been super open with myself. If I only had five followers on Snapchat I’d still being doing the same stuff.”
