Harvey Weinstein has had his BAFTA membership officially suspended in the wake of sexual assault allegations against him.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts confirmed that they have informed the disgraced Hollywood producer of their decision on Wednesday as his behaviour was “unacceptable and incompatible with BAFTA’s values”.

A statement posted on their official website said that they hoped the decision would send a “clear message” to the industry.

“Whilst Bafta has previously been a beneficiary of Mr Weinstein's support for its charitable work, it considers the reported alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with Bafta's values,” it read.

“This has led to Mr Weinstein's suspension, and it will be followed by a formal process as laid out in Bafta's constitution.

“We hope this announcement sends a clear message that such behaviour has absolutely no place in our industry.”

Weinstein is usually a regular at the BAFTA Awards each year and even throws an star-studded after party.

A host of female star including Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Mira Sorvino have accused the producer of sexual harassment.

Georgina Chapman, Weinstein’s wife of 10 years, revealed that she had left her husband in the wake of the allegations.

While Weinstein has admitted to “causing a lot of pain” with his behaviour, his spokesperson said that "any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied”.
