Harry Redknapp has opened up about the moment he ran over his own wife, describing it as the “worst experience of my life”.

The accident, which happened in Bournemouth in 2016, resulted in Sandra needing to be operated on.

Harry praised his wife’s bravery and said she never once blamed him for her injury. Speaking to The Sun he said: “It was the worst experience of my life but she honestly never even blamed me – and it was completely my fault.

“She never said to me, ‘You should have watched what you were doing’ or made me feel bad. Even when she was laying with a broken ankle in the road she was just unbelievable, she didn’t scream.”

He continued: “In hospital I kept apologising. But she just said, ‘You thought I’d crossed the road, there’s no blame’. “She didn’t say, ‘You stupid idiot’, even though I felt like a stupid idiot.”

The accident became the punchline of several jokes on I’m A Celebrity, leaving viewers pleading with hosts Declan Donnelly and Holly Willoughby to stop making the “poor taste” remarks.

Harry delighted viewers with tales of their 54 year romance during his stint in the jungle camp. He praised Sandra for making him his favourite jam roly-poly and opened up about the moment they met at a Sunday disco at the Two Puddings in Stratford in 1963.

Viewers were close to tears after the two were briefly reunited ahead of the final, which saw him crowned King of the Jungle.

“I can’t help this, it is not like me, I don’t normally cry, I’m pretty old school,” he said as he embraced Sandra. “Are you pleased to see me?

“It’s funny, 54 years and we just don’t want to be apart, that’s done me up today, I’ve missed her so much. I love you so much,”

The couple, who married in 1967, have two sons together, Mark and ex-Liverpool footballer Jamie.
