Fans have rushed to support Stephen Fry after he revealed his battle with prostate cancer with a heartbreaking video.

The well-loved presenter posted the emotional YouTube video on his social media pages, opening up about being diagnosed with the illness late last year before undergoing surgery to remove his prostate.

Fry posted the 12-minute clip to his social media page, with the caption: “For the last 2 months I’ve been in the throes of a rather unwelcome and unexpected adventure. I’m sorry I haven’t felt able to talk about it till now, but here I am explaining what has been going on.”

His fans and friends were quick to flood his timeline with messages of support on Friday, praising him for his "grace and eloquence" at such a difficult time.

In a matter of minutes, thousands of fans began sending well-wishes and love to the 60-year-old “national treasure” as he continues his recovery.

Replying to his tweet, one wrote: “I took a gasp of breath when I saw this....oh Stephen wishing you strength, love and big hugs. Most importantly keep on being you - your way with words brings a smile to my face!”

While another said: “Eloquent and graceful as ever! So sorry to hear this news, but pleased to hear you're on the road to recovery! Wishing you a full and speedy one.”

“In true Stephen fry fashion, this has been the most educational bad news I’ve ever received. Wishing you all the best, you legend,” commented somebody else.

QI, the show Fry hosted for 13 years, also paid tribute to Fry, with a simple tweet reading: "Sending lots of love and support, from everyone at QI. x".

Many were quick to share their own stories and experiences with cancer, as well as praise the star for raising awareness of prostate cancer and who is affected.

It comes after he stepped down as host of the Bafta Film Awards after 12 years fronting the ceremony.

The comedian and presenter said that he felt it was time to let someone else “take the Baftas on to new heights and greater glories.”
