George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road leads the pack with 10 nominations for this year’s Empire Awards with J.J Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens following close behind with nine.

Both films have been nominated for the prestigious Best Film award which will see them rally for votes alongside The Hateful Eight, The Revenant and The Martian which has scooped a total of six nominations.

Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated for the coveted Best Actor gong for his role as fur trapper Hugh Glass in The Revenant. He faces competition from Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Macbeth/Steve Jobs), Tom Hardy (Legend/Mad Max: Fury Road) and Creed star Michael B. Jordan who has been overlooked by the big awards ceremonies.

The Best Actress category sees Brie Larson (Room) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) nominated alongside Jennifer Lawrence for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 over her latest film Joy. Emily Blunt (Sicario) and Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) are also up for the gong.
