Dame Emma Thompson cheekily asked Prince William for a kiss when the pair "sniggered together" as she was made a dame at Buckingham Palace.

The critically-acclaimed actress said she “sniggered” at the Duke of Cambridge, who she has known since he was young, when he awarded her the honour at a ceremony in London.

Thompson said: “I love Prince William. I've known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other.

“I said, 'I can't kiss you, can I?' And he said, 'No don't!’.

“He's looking wonderful and doing so well. He said, 'This day isn't about me, it's about you'.'"

Oscar-winning Thompson wore a teal suit for her big day, using the ceremony to support equal pay with a Fawcett Society badge.
