Ellie Goulding is battling exhaustion and has been warned she risks losing her voice for good.

The singer, 29, cancelled two shows this weekend because doctors ordered her not to perform or travel.

She has played 100 shows across the world already this year as part of a gruelling touring schedule. This week she announced she had pulled out of performances in Finland and Latvia.

She told the Standard: “I’ve had to cancel some festivals this weekend because of exhaustion. I’ve done nearly 100 shows this year and my doctor has said if I do this weekend my voice might not bounce back from it. They did a bunch of tests on me and I have been diagnosed with exhaustion.

“I’m a hard worker. I don’t cancel anything unless I really need to, but my doctor said, ‘Ellie, your voice is going to burn out’. Glastonbury was the point where I realised I was pretty exhausted. It’s all good though — I’m feeling really positive about the rest of the year.” The star is known for her energetic performances and looks after her health carefully with regular exercise and a vegan diet.

Her next performance is scheduled for July 31 in Chicago. She travels to New Zealand and Australia in September and October as she continues her world tour.

She revealed her diagnosis to the Standard at Working Title Pictures in Fitzrovia, where she defied doctors’ orders to host a private screening of environmental documentary Racing Extinction.

“I’m here tonight because I am so passionate,” she said. “My doctor advised I didn’t do anything for the next few weeks, but this screening room is less than a mile from my house and I don’t have to sing … and this is a matter of saving the planet. It’s the most important thing in the world.” Goulding tweeted news of the cancellations yesterday, citing “ill-health”, but revealed the real reason to the Standard.

Her schedule has also taken its toll on her personal life. She split from boyfriend Dougie Poynter in February because of their conflicting workloads, although they remain close and he attended the screening on Tuesday.

The documentary highlights the impact global warming is having on many species and is directed by Oscar-winning activist Louie Psihoyos.

Goulding said that to help the problem Londoners can cut down on eating meat. She added: “I understand wholeheartedly how hard that is. I’ve eaten meat for years and I know what it’s like to eat meat, it tastes nice, it’s easy, it’s convenient. I know that it’s not easy to give up old habits but just not eating meat for one day a week makes a difference.”
