Ed Sheeran has told how he wishes his character had been “brutally, brutally murdered” on Game of Thrones to appease viewers who were unimpressed by his cameo.

The Shape of You singer made a one-off appearance during the season seven premiere of the HBO show.

Sheeran appeared as a Lannister Soldier who Masie William’s character stumbled across.

Speaking to BuzzFeed about his appearance, the 27-year-old said: "I know what Game of Thrones fans hope happened to my character.

Killed Off: Sheeran told how his character should have murdered

"I'm sure they think my character got brutally, brutally murdered, but I think my character is still out there. I think he's chilling.

"It was fun being on Game of Thrones, but I definitely think they should have killed me off in the episode. I reckon that probably would have been the redemption for people that didn't like it."

At the time, viewers expressed their confusion at seeing such a famous non-acting talent pop up in their favourite fantasy show.

One user wrote: "Seeing Ed Sheeran in game of thrones was the biggest wtf moment of my existence!"

Another commented: "#GameOfThones writing room: Ok we're beyond the books, we have creative control. Concept: Ed Sheeran camping in the woods singing a song."

A third added: "#GameOfThones @edsheeran Ed Sheeran can drop a hit in any century bruhh!!!"

Sheeran's comments come as he bagged himself an American Music Award nomination alongside pal Taylor Swift.

The best friends discussed being nominated alongside God’s Plan rapper Drake as they took on a hike.

The pair were quick to announce that each other will win before mutually agreeing that “Drake’s gonna win.”

Swift captured his struggles in an Instagram video in which she teased: “You okay bro?”

The question resulted in Sheeran flipping the finger at Swift, leaving the pop sensation in stitches.

The 28-year-old then proceeded to mock: “It’s called exercise, have you ever done cardio?”

Insisting that he has done cardio “now and then”, Swift told the Shape Of You singer: “Strumming a guitar doesn’t count.”
