David Cassidy has revealed that he is suffering from dementia at the age of 66.

The former 1970s teen star has said that he is battling the degenerative disease after forgetting a number of lyrics at a concert on Saturday night.

The US star said that he was previously ‘in denial’ about his condition but will now stop touring.

“I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming,” Cassidy told People Magazine.

Speaking about watching his mother battle the same disease, the singer added: “In the end, the only way I knew she recognized me is with one single tear that would drop from her eye every time I walked into the room. … I feared I would end up that way.

"I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I've been, without any distractions... I want to love. I want to enjoy life.”

Cassidy’s interview comes after his performance in Los Angeles on Saturday night sparked worry among fans.

The singer appeared to struggle through his set, forgetting lyrics to a number of his well-known tracks.

A number of videos of the performance emerged online following the concert, showing him stumbling over on stage and launching into long, meandering stories.

The singer, who has struggled with alcohol addiction in the past, attended rehab last year and filed for bankruptcy back in 2015.
