Chris Hemsworth has revealed he does not want to lose weight or shoot a film in water for a very long time.

Hemsworth, 32, plays Owen Chase in Ron Howard’s In The Heart of the Sea which tells the story of a whaling crew who were believed to have been stranded at sea for 90 days after their boat was damaged by a sperm whale in 1820.

The actor endured a gruelling diet of just 500 calories to shed weight to play the part of the malnourished crew member.

Speaking to London Live at the film’s European premiere Hemsworth said: “I’d done it for Rush but not this extreme and it’s something I didn’t necessarily want to do again."

Despite finding the experience unenjoyable, Hemsworth said shedding the weight made it easier to get into the role.

“But it added to what we were putting on screen," he said. "By those final sequences when we were supposed to be exhausted and emotional, we were feeling that way off screen too so it helped.

“I feel like we were wet for 90 per cent of the film and uncomfortable and hungry, so I don’t want to lose weight and maybe not do anything in the water for a while."

Tom Holland - who plays young Thomas Nickerson - shared Hemsworth's sentiments and described shooting the film as "gruelling".

He said: "It was gruelling, man. It was really tough, but for all of the right reasons. Ron is a director that is adamant about making everything authentic. As an actor it's really important to do justice to your characters. The fact that it was difficult and hard work meant we were doing our job."
