Film stars Jessica Chastain and Marion Cotillard were joined by models Bella Hadid and Lily- Rose Depp as they dazzled on the red carpet at the star-studded opening of Cannes.

The 70th anniversary Festival launched on Wednesday under sunny Cote D'Azur skies in the usual glitzy fashion.

Cotillard, wearing a black lace-up dress, was also joined by co-star Charlotte Gainsbourg at the Grand Theatre Lumiere as the pair celebrated the screening of their new film, Ismael's Ghosts.

Miss Sloane actress Chastain is on this year’s official selection jury, alongside fellow actors Will Smith, Agnès Jaoui, and Fan Bingbing, presided over by director Pedro Almodóvar.

Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski were both dressed in shimmering floor-length gowns as they posed for photos at the event.

While Lily- Rose Depp looked beautiful in a Grecian-style white dress.

Although big Hollywood fare is thin on the ground at this year’s festival, eagerly-awaited new offerings by some of the world’s most acclaimed and original directors are set to screen.

Armed police even joined the fashion police on the red carpet as guests passed through metal detectors and security cordons manned by officers in bullet-proof vests bearing machine guns before arriving on the red carpet — where they were subject to the festival’s famously strict dress code. The rules, which include black tie and black shoes for men, were strictly enforced.

Some festival goers were reportedly turned away for offences including having an insufficiently dark suit or socks that were too short.

Two years ago a group of women were turned away from the premiere of Todd Haynes’s film Carol because they were not wearing high heels, while the wife of Asif Kapadia, who directed award-winning documentary Amy, was also stopped for wearing flats.

Last year Julia Roberts rebelled against the edict by walking the red carpet barefoot, after removing her heels once she had passed through security.

Haynes, who directed Carol and I’m Not There, will debut Wonderstruck, which reunites him with actress Julianne Moore as well as Michelle Williams.

Following the success of his 2015 film The Lobster, Yorgos Lanthimos returns to the festival with The Killing of a Sacred Deer, his second English language film, which stars Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell.

Smith, who has not had a film play at Cannes before, was dapperly dressed and cheerfully posing with festival-goers who screamed "Will! Will!" "West Philadelphia is a long way from Cannes," joked an enthusiastic Smith, referring to his hometown.
