Dan Smith had a rather awkward run-in with Katy Perry on the red carpet at the Brit Awards.

The Bastille frontman said that he tried to make conversation with the US superstar by making an Alan Partridge joke, which went down like a lead balloon.

“We just bumped into Katy Perry, which isn’t your every day thing,” Smith told the BBC.

“Having to have a conversation with her, I was really awkward and everyone was shouting ‘Dan’ so I tried to make an Alan Partridge joke and I think it went a little bit over her head.”

Re-living the mortifying moment later on, the Brits-nominated star told Capital’s Roman Kemp:

“So I ran into Katy Perry and was like ‘have you seen Alan Partridge’, her response was ‘No’ and I was like ‘This joke is going nowhere’. That's my f****** life.”

Bastille, who are nominated for Best British Band, had a rather dramatic start to the evening as they had to ‘break onto’ the red carpet following a nightmare journey.

“That’s why we never get allowed to things like this and that's why when we do come like we just did we had to run halfway down the motorway, get the DLR and the tube because we were running so late and then break in the side of the red carpet,” said Smith.

“And then I asked Katy Perry if she likes Alan Partridge… it doesn’t really get any better then that.”

Bastille weren’t the only band to get public transport to the ceremony as Breakthrough nominees Blossoms also got the tube.

Perry is set to perform her brand new single Chained to the Rhythm at the awards ceremony.
