Beyoncé fans have been left outraged after the singer lost out on the Album of the Year Grammy to Adele.

The US pop superstar, 35, was nominated for Lemonade but was beaten by Adele’s comeback album, 25 at Sunday night’s ceremony.

Adele paid tribute to Beyoncé as she picked up the award and snapped it in half to share with her “idol”.

She later echoed the sentiments of Beyoncé’s fans and questioned what it will take for the Crazy in Love singer to receive the title.

Speaking in the press room she said: “I felt like it was her time to win. What the f*** does she have to do to win album of the year? That's how I feel.”

She continued: “I spoke to her before just to let her know how honoured and privileged I felt to be nominated alongside her, and we spoke afterward as well and she was very gracious and humble, as always, as we've come to expect.

“And the reason I felt the need to say something is because my album of the year is Lemonade. She is my icon of my whole life.”

The award sparked a race row on Twitter with users pointing out that the last black woman to win Album of the Year was Lauryn Hill in 1999.

One user called the decision a “crime”.

Others criticised Adele for her acceptance speech which saw her thank Beyoncé for 'empowering her black friends'.

“All us artists here, we f****** adore you,” she said.

“The way you make me and my friends feel. The way you make my black friends feel is empowering. You make them stand up for themselves and I love you and I always have.”

One user tweeted:"I mean I love Adele but her graciousness hit more like a sting than a balm."

Others defended her comments with one user tweeting: "Don't attack Adele. Adele does her thing. Attack the recording academy for repeatedly not crediting black artists."

Another posted: "Was Beyoncé's album not for Black People? Why are y'all mad at Adele for pointing out how it makes Black people feel."
