Avril Lavigne has announced the release of her first album in five years.

Head Above Water, which will be the sixth studio album from the Canadian singer, will arrive on February 15, 2019.

Lavigne unveiled the cover artwork on her Instagram account, and said she was “so excited” to “finally share” details of her new material with fans. The album will be her first since her self-titled record, which was released in 2013.

“I feel like I’ve really opened up on this record more than I ever have before,” she said. “Each song tells a story that will hopefully inspire others to believe in themselves and stand up for what they know is right and what they truly deserve.”

Lavigne took part in a Twitter Q&A with her fans to mark the announcement, and revealed that she'd "love" to collaborate with fellow Canadian Shawn Mendes.

Fans went wild for the announcement and praised her new musical direction, describing the new single as "incredible" and "completely different compared to anything she's released before."

The 34-year-old announced her return to the music industry in September, when she released the single Head Above Water. She also revealed that her struggle with Lyme disease had forced her to step back from the spotlight, as she had felt too exhausted to perform.

Lavigne posted an open letter on her website, which detailed her “physical and emotional battles” with the illness.

“I felt like I was drowning,” she wrote. “Like I was going underwater and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe.”

Lavigne went on to reveal that she “had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down.”
