Appropriate Adult Emily Watson lands Award in Monte Carlo for Fred West drama

In February 1994 Janet Leach, a mother of five from Gloucestershire, was at home making her children's tea when the phone rang. Janet was on an access course which when completed would enable her to train as a social worker. Janet was also on an approved list of 'appropriate adults', volunteers who can be asked by the police to sit in on interviews with minors or vulnerable adults in order to assist them and safeguard their rights. Following the phone call she left the house and arrived at Gloucester police station where she was simply told to assist a 52 year old male. Her duty as an 'appropriate adult' was to ensure that the male understood the questions put to him by the police. The name of the male to be questioned was Frederick Walter Stephen West.

Emily Watson's award success continues for her role in a drama about serial killer Fred West.

The 45-year-old was named outstanding actress in a mini-series for ITV1 show Appropriate Adult at the Golden Nymph Awards in Monte Carlo.

Watson, who previously picked up a TV Bafta for her role, played West's confidante Janet Leach in the critically-acclaimed programme.

At the time she won her TV Bafta, Watson admitted she was worried when she first heard about the attempt to make a show about a story of such "truly terrible depravity".

She said: "When I first heard about this show I thought I probably shouldn't do it because of the subject matter - and then I read the script."

But she admitted the role had taken its toll, saying: "I know things I wish I didn't about that case."

The annual Golden Nymph awards ceremony was part of the 52nd Monte Carlo Television Festival and attended by the event's president, Prince Albert of Monaco.

Sky News received two awards for best news item for Inside Homs and best 24-hour news programme for The Fall of Tripoli.

Former Saturday Night Live star Tina Fey won outstanding actress in a comedy series for 30 Rock, while Woody Harrelson was named outstanding actor in a TV film for Game Change.

The International TV Audience Awards saw prizes given to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Desperate Housewives and the US soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful.

Medieval fantasy drama series Game of Thrones won the outstanding international producer award for David Benioff, DB Weiss, Frank Doelger and Carolyn Strauss.

Prince Albert later presented Disney president Anne Sweeney with the prestigious Honorary Golden Nymph prize.

Director General of the Monte Carlo Television Festival Laurent Puons said: "We have been delighted to host some of the most renowned international stars and to award the best of the world's television talent with the prestigious Golden Nymph."
