US actress Amy Schumer joked that she has to write her own material because of her "plus-plus size" figure.

Schumer, 34, made the admission during her acceptance speech for the MVP Award for Trainwreck at the 21st annual Critics' Choice Awards.

"I am plus-plus-size actress Amy Schumer," she said as she took the stage at Barker Hangar in California.

Holding the award over her midsection she continued: "Thank you for this trophy, covering the reason I have to write my own [stuff].

"If you're an actress and you have this area right here, you have to write your own stuff if you want to get it made."

The actress also poked fun at the reaction to her Pirelli calendar shoot which saw her strip off for photographer Annie Leibovitz.

"This is where I get really brave," she said. "That's what you want everybody to say when a naked photo of you goes viral, you want them to say: 'What a brave photo.' Like wow, thanks. Thank you."

She went on to thank Trainwreck director Judd Apatow for letting her tell her story.

"Thank you so much, I can't believe that this whole year has happened and that Judd let me tell my story and I'm so happy I don't have to talk about how autobiographical it is anymore," she said.

Schumer - who was joined at the event by her boyfriend Ben Hanisch - also won the award for Best Actress in a Comedy.

On taking to the stage to accept the gong she broke the heel on her shoe, kicked it off and proceeded to hobble to the stage.

Addressing the audience for a second time she joked: "Ew, who wants to hear from this b***h again?"
