Denim is a fashion staple of most wardrobes and its enduring appeal is largely thanks to the screen legends that have made it cool.

Images of movie stars such as James Dean in 'Giant' and Marlon Brando in 'The Wild One' or rock stars such as Mick Jagger strutting his stuff at Knebworth in 1976 all embodied denim’s cult fashion status.

Now one London gallery is paying homage to the endurable fabric and those who have made it popular in a stunning new photographic exhibition.

The special four-week exhibition at the Getty Images Gallery provides a stylish snapshot of our love affair with denim and the people who wear it and contains over 40 images portraying the history, mood and maverick style of the fabric.

Getty Images Gallery Director, Louise Garzcewska says, "Denim is associated with creativity, cool, and celebrity in every era from its very origins to the present day.”

And it seems that most Britons agree - research by Cotton USA, who is sponsoring the exhibition, suggests that the average Briton has 13 items of denim clothing in their wardrobe.

The Icons in Denim exhibition is at the Getty Images Gallery from 4th March to 10th April 2004. Opening hours are Mo to Fri: 10am to 6pm and Sat: 12pm to 6pm
