The comedian, 40, who was hosting the event at London’s Grand Connaught Rooms, said he felt guilty that she was subjected to “disgusting” abuse.

Jenner – who received a Loud and Proud award at the event – was subjected to vile slurs as she left the venue on Friday night.

Speaking to The Sun, Carr said: “Caitlyn was so shook up after it. It was absolutely horrible.

“I know it’s not my fault but I was hosting the event and for Caitlyn to get that abuse…it’s awful.”

He continued: “It’s not like she’d just turned up to a working men’s club or a shopping centre. It was an LGBT event which is full of open-minded people.

“It’s disgusting that someone can get transphobic abuse at an LGBT event. It shows just how far we have to go.”

According to The Sun someone threw something at Jenner while another shouted: “Oi, Bruce, get your d*** out.”

A spokeswoman for the Met Police confirmed officers were called to the event.

She told the Standard: “Police were called on Friday, 12 May at 11.40om to an awards event in Great Queen Street following an allegation of a hate crime.

“Officers attended and spoke to one of the organisers who alleged that a photographer had verbally abused a woman and a man as they were leaving the event.”

Scotland Yard said no arrests had been made and enquiries were continuing.

Jenner went public with her transition from Bruce in 2015.

She has been in the UK promoting her book The Secrets Of My Life.
