Adele has announced her long-awaited comeback five years since her last album.

The 32-year-old songstress is to host Saturday Night Live (SNL) next weekend in her first major televised appearance since her last tour in 2016.

The Someone Like You singer will take the reins on the US sketch comedy show with H.E.R. performing as the live musical guest.

She revealed the big news on Sunday night by sharing an image of three post-it-notes reading "Oct 2" "Adele and "H.E.R.”

Alongside the colourful triptych she wrote: “Bloooooody hellllll I’m so excited about this!! And also absolutely terrified!

“My first ever hosting gig and for SNL of all things!!!!”

“I’ve always wanted to do it as a stand alone moment, so that I could roll up my sleeves and fully throw myself into it, but the time has never been right.

“But if there was ever a time for any of us to jump head first into the deep end with our eyes closed and hope for the best it’s 2020 right?”

She explained that it will mark more than a decade since she first performed on the internationally acclaimed show, with her return feeling like a “full circle” moment.

"It'll be almost 12 years to the day that I first appeared on the show, during an election...which went on to break my career in America, so it feels full circle and I just couldn't possibly say no,” she wrote.

"I am besides myself that H.E.R will be the musical guest!!

"I love her SO much I can't wait to melt into a flaming hot mess when she performs, then confuse myself while I laugh my a*** off in between it all.

"See you next week."

Her post received more than 650,000 likes within an hour as fans rushed to share their delight and support.

Actress Gal Gadot commented: “Enjoy the awesome ride!”

Comedian Alan Carr wrote: “Amazing!!!” followed by a stream of flame emojis.

H.E.R. shared the same post-it image, with a shorter caption reading: “Can’t wait!!!!!”

Adele told guests at a wedding in February to expect a new album in September.

However, asked for an update in June she told fans to “be patient”.

Her most recent album was 25, which won album of the year at the Grammys in 2015.

Adele split from husband Simon Konecki last year.

She has also made headlines for her weight loss, sharing pictures on social media of her slimmer figure.
