Adele left fans fearing Dolly Parton had died after she paid tribute to her “hero” by dressing as the country music icon.

The British singer, 29, donned a blonde wig and heavy make-up to profess her love for the US superstar.

In a nod to her flamboyant look, Adele wore a pink suit with metallic heels and a statement jewelled necklace.

She captioned the image: “The effortless queen of song, Dolly Parton! We love you! We wish we could possess an ounce of your ability.

“You were the hero of our night! A hero of my life. I'll always love you x.”

But the post caused panic with some fans fearing the tribute was to mark Parton’s death. One fan commented: “Omg I thought this was an RIP tribute and had a mini heart attack.”

Another tweeted: “Holy shot I read this and thought Dolly had died!”

A third posted: “Listen, I thought Dolly had passed away from this post and I started crying. You gotta chill, Adele.”

Others praised the picture saying it had ‘made their lives’, while others claimed to have been left “speechless”.

Parton previously opened up about being a fan of Adele, who she referenced on her single Head Over High Heels.

“I love her, love her, love her,” she told Digital Spy in 2016. “Did you notice I used her name in one of the songs on the album?

“On Head Over High Heels, when I say ‘I put on my tight dress, hair piled on my head, painting my lips red and my eyes like Adele’.”

She also said she would be up for a collaboration, saying: “I would love to do something with her. Maybe write a song? Maybe do a duet. So pass that word along.”
