50 Cent has spoken out about filing for bankruptcy, admitting that he did it as he 'needs protection'.

Speaking on Conan, the rapper claimed that he has a 'bullseye' on his back because of his celebrity status, which helps to attract lawsuits.

While promoting his new film Southpaw on Wednesday, he told the host: "Yeah, I need protection."

He added: "You get a bullseye painted on your back when you’re successful, and it’s public, you become the ideal person for lawsuits."

He told Conan: "Times are hard out here, for real. That picture was actually taken by Jake Gyllenhaal. Total empty parking lot, so he took the picture."

The hip-hop star announced that he was filing for bankruptcy earlier this week, just days after being ordered to pay $5 million in a law suit.

He filed papers at the US Bankruptcy Court in Hartford, Connecticut, on Monday, with reported assets and debts in the range of $10 million to $50 million.

It came after a jury ordered the star to pay $5 million to Lastonia Leviston, whose sex tape he allegedly 'leaked' and posted online without her permission to embarrass his rap rival Rick Ross.
