Geroge Best remained "desperately ill" today as he continued his fight for life.

The 59- year- old former Manchester United star has been in intensive care at London's Cromwell Hospital since suffering a lung infection last Friday.

He is said to be stable but in a critical condition.

The doctor treating Best, Professor Roger Williams, said: "He's a tough person to survive all that he has done. I've been gloomy since Friday about the chances of recovery."
