Ben Stiller raised laughs at the Academy Awards by dressing as a blue Na'vi alien from Avatar as he presented the best make-up award at the Oscars.

The comedian wore face paint, a wig and a tail and talked to the film's director James Cameron from the stage in the fictional Na'vi language.

"That means, 'this seemed like a better idea and rehearsal'. It was between this and the Nazi uniform but the show seemed a little Hitler heavy," the Tropic Thunder star said.

He continued: "After I announce the winner I will try to stand as far away as possible so as not to demean their moment of triumph."

Stiller presented the award to Barney Burman, Mindy Hall and Joel Harlow for Star Trek.
