Since 1992, commissioning organisation Artangel has collaborated with practitioners in all areas of the visual and performing arts to produce unique installations and events in locations beyond the walls of the cinema, gallery, theatre and concert hall. It helped artist Rachel Whiteread cast a house inside-out in concrete in a Mile End Street; facilitated composer Orlando Gough and Alain Platel's promenade performance of 16 London choirs in Camden's Roundhouse and assisted artist Michael Landy to destroy everything he owned in Oxford Street's empty C&A store.

Kicking off Artangel's tenth-anniversary year of projects is stage and screen director Atom Egoyan's film-based installation 'Steenbeckett', set in a series of rooms in the empty ethnographical Museum Of Mankind near Piccadilly. Mourning the passing of recorded memory as a physical object with the switch from tape and film technology to digital, Egoyan leads the viewer on an atmospheric trip beginning in a room filled with film flickering through an old cut-and-tape Steenbeck editing machine. The film is Egoyan's version of Samuel Beckett's play Krapp's Last Tape, about a 69-year-old man reflecting on the words of his 39-year-old self recorded on an old reel-to-reel tape machine. Another room projects a digital version of the film while a dusty corridor filled with film cans and the physical props of film-making leads to a viewing platform overlooking the installation.

Steenbeckett: Atom Egoyan, from Fri 15 Feb, Former Museum Of Mankind, 6 Burlington Gardens, W1 (020-7713 1402).
