This festival has bloomed since it began in 1998 and is now endorsed by the London Mayor himself.

Its aim is to celebrate London and the Thames as belonging to the people.

There are many river-themed events on the river itself and on the banks. Attractions include lantern processions, river races, diplays and events, funfair rides, live music, street theatre and food and craft stalls.

On Saturday more than 300 boats take part in the Great River Race. This is a 22-mile marathon featuring war canoes, Cornish gigs, wherries and Chinese dragon boats that will run between Richmond and Island Gardens in the Docklands. The procession can be viewed from the various Thames bridges along the route.

The firework display has been cancelled as a mark of respect for the victims of the American terrorists attacks.
