Pavilion Road: artisan food and drink street opens near Sloane Square

The artisan shopping destination welcomes a butcher, baker and diamond ring maker

Cartier and Tiffany have some unlikely new neighbours near Sloane Square — a butcher, a greengrocer and a cheesemonger.

They form part of London’s newest village high street, created in the heart of Made In Chelsea country by one of the capital’s wealthiest landowners.

The row of artisan food and drink shops also includes a wine merchant. A bakery is due to open in time for Christmas and a tenant is being sought for a sixth unit.

It is part of a £205 million Sloane Street development and follows a consultation with residents which showed the majority wanted to see more independent traders in the area, better known for its luxury global brands.

The shops are in Pavilion Road, which runs parallel to Sloane Street, beneath five floors of new offices in a building called George House. Hugh Seaborn, chief executive of the Cadogan property company, which manages Earl Cadogan’s £6 billion Chelsea estate, said “the obvious thing to do” would have been to build new mews houses.

Instead, the shopping street plan was chosen because “for a residential area there are very few side streets with retail and this was an opportunity to create one. The shops will be regularly visited and local people will find a good use for them”.

Mr Seaborn said it had taken more than a year to find the tenants as “the artisanal guys don’t have a big infrastructure, for example they don’t necessarily have lawyers, so we have to work in partnership with them”. The cheese shop, London Cheesemongers, previously operated as a market stall.

Tom Gibson, owner of the butcher’s shop, Provenance, said: “Every village needs a good butcher at its heart.” The other shops are Pavilion Wine, Bread Ahead and greengrocer Natoora.

More stores are expected to open on the other side of the road next year.
