Two men have been arrested over an assault on a Super League rugby league player who may lose an eye.

Sean Gleeson, 26, was punched in the face a number of times following a row with three men in Wigan, Greater Manchester, in the early hours of Sunday.

He suffered serious injuries to his eye and eye socket and was taken to hospital where he remains.

Gleeson became involved in a fight with one of the men outside Ibiza Bar in King Street and the others joined in before they left the Hull KR player in the road and ran away.

Following the release of CCTV images, Greater Manchester Police said that two men aged 21 and 24 were arrested on suspicion of assault and both were bailed until April 28 pending further inquiries.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses. Detective Sergeant Peter Carletti said: "You might not have seen the actual attack but you may have seen a group of white men running away. I would urge anyone who thinks they may know who is responsible to come forward and speak to us."

Anyone with information should call Wigan police on 0161 856 7259 / 7967 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Wigan-born Gleeson signed for Hull KR last year but has had a string of injury problems.

He previously played for Salford City Reds, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Widnes Vikings and Wigan Warriors. He has represented Ireland at international level.
